INTRODUCTION


The objective of this project is to manage the control system of railway gate using the microcontroller. When train arrives at the sensing point alarm is triggered at the railway crossing point so that the people get intimation that gate is going to be closed.

AT89C51 Microcontroller: The Micro controller (AT89C51) is a low power; high performance CMOS 8-bit micro controller with 4K bytes of Flash programmable and erasable read only memory (PEROM).


INTRODUCTION ON EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

An Embedded system is a combination of computer hardware and software, and perhaps additional mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a specific function.

The common design requirement include –
Processing power
Memory
Development cost
Number of Units
Expected Lifetime
Reliability


POWER SUPPLY:
To run the electronic gadget at home it is provided by some power supply. The microcontroller used (at89c51) requires 12v D.C supply.

For design of a regulated power supply components used are:
Transformer.
Diodes.
Rectifiers.
Regulated IC chips.
Capacitive filters.


Conclusions:
 Hence the Unmanned railway gates operate according to the data input from sensors to microcontroller. First an alarm is triggered and then the gate is operated.

ABSTRACT

The main aim of the project is to establish automatic railway gates in place of existing manual railway gates, to reduce maintenance expenditure, human mistakes, and accidents. It is a low cost, maintenance free so that the concept is implemented by using an 8051 series micro controller. Here we established a railway gate moving towards top and bottom directions with the help of a 5V bi-directional linear DC motor, controlled by micro controller according to the program written in internal flash memory.
One sensors are attached to the railway gate to monitor whether the gate is properly closed or not, and to detect the person or vehicle movement while the gate is closing. Two more sensors are used to detect train movements i.e., entering and leaving. The intelligent firmware detects the train entry near by the railway gate with the help of entry sensor, and then the railway gate starts moving towards the downward direction. The motor stops rotating if any obstructions occurred during this operation. If the gate is closed in a specified time the controller allows the train to move on the track; otherwise the controller reduces the speed of train by putting appropriate control signals on the track until the gate is closed.
Finally, the gate is not closed if the train is near by the gate the controller stops the train by putting appropriate control signals on the track until the gate is closed. The gate automatically moves towards upward direction after leaving the train. It can be detected by leaving sensor. With the help of this control system, we can avoid accidents that occur at railway gates, human mistakes, and high maintenance of the control operation. This project was implemented by using 8051 micro controllers. The programs were written in embedded ‘C’.

TOOLS: RIDE/KEIL to write code, ISP to burn the chip.
TARGET DEVICE: At89s52 based our own developed board.
ADVANTAGES: Low cost, automated operation, Low Power consumption.

Overview

Early level crossings had a flagman in a nearby booth who would, on the approach of a train, wave a red flag or lantern to stop all traffic and clear the tracks. Manual or electrical closable gates that barricaded the roadway were later introduced. The gates were intended to be a complete barrier against intrusion of any road traffic onto the railway. In the early days of the railways much road traffic was horsedrawn or included livestock. It was thus necessary to provide a real barrier. Thus, crossing gates, when closed to road traffic, crossed the entire width of the road. When opened to allow road users to cross the line, the gates were swung across the width of the railway, preventing any pedestrians or animals getting onto the line.
With the appearance of motor vehicles, this barrier became less effective and the need for a barrier to livestock diminished dramatically. Many countries therefore substituted the gated crossings with weaker but more highly visible barriers and relied upon road users following the associated warning signals to stop.
In many countries, level crossings on less important roads and railway lines are often "open" or "uncontrolled", sometimes with warning lights or bells to warn of approaching trains. Ungated crossings represent a safety concern; many accidents have occurred due to failure to notice or obey the warning.

Project Description:

Our project is designed using 8051 microcontroller to avoid railway accidents happening at unattended railway gates. This project utilizes two IR trans-receiver pair; one pair of IR trans-receiver is fixed at one side of the railway gate and similarly the other pair is fixed at the other side of the railway gate. Whenever a signal from any of the trans-receiver is detected a buzzer is sounded for say five seconds and then the gates are closed we will be using DC geared motor to open and close the gates. Now when the train is again detected at other IR trans-receiver the gates are opened. We will be using L293 driver IC to control the motor i.e. open and close the gates.
